Painting architecture and landscape scenes in watercolor can seem intimidating, but it doesn't have to be. Creating a dynamic composition with a preliminary sketch is key, along with striking a balance between controlling the medium while allowing the paint to do what it wants to do. Watercolor artist Diane Swanson will offer a few ways and techniques to help participants work towards that balance in a relaxed easy setting.
Participants will practice watercolor technique demonstrated by Diane, to learn some of the magic of the medium, then will apply these techniques in creating their own watercolor painting, inspired by Wiawaka's varied architectural elements harmoniously set in nature. Diane will work with each artist through the process, with tips on how to handle composition, color and brushwork.
Diane Swanson is a visual artist based in the Lake George/Adirondack region; much of her work celebrates the lakes, mountains, woods and landscapes of the Northeast. The inherent poetry of nature and the push and pull of positive and negative space inspire her painting practice. Although her paintings are representational, she approaches her work with an eye to more abstract qualities, harmonizing atmosphere and movement with form, color and line.
