Seagle Festival Joins Forces with other New York Opera Companies for Historic Statewide Tour of Happy End

SCHROON LAKE, NY — Seagle Festival, the Adirondack Region’s premier destination for opera and musical theater, is proud to announce its participation in a landmark collaborative touring production of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht’s Happy End.

In a groundbreaking partnership, Seagle Festival joins The Glimmerglass FestivalOpera Saratoga, and Finger Lakes Opera to bring this jazz-infused musical satire to audiences across New York and Western Massachusetts. The tour marks a significant milestone in Seagle’s 111-year history, reinforcing its role as a vital pillar in the New York State cultural ecosystem.

Bringing World-Class Performance to the Adirondacks

As the oldest vocal training program in the United States, Seagle Festival has long been a launchpad for the world’s most promising singing actors. By participating in this statewide collective, Seagle is building a sustainable touring model that expands access to high-caliber live operatic performances to audiences across New York state.

“Our mission has always been about fostering the next generation of talent while serving the Adirondack community,” said Tony Kostecki, Seagle Festival’s General Director. “Collaborating with our colleagues at Glimmerglass, Opera Saratoga, and Finger Lakes Opera allows us to bring a provocative, world-class production like Happy End directly to our neighbors in Schroon Lake and beyond, helping cement our reputation for innovative art.”

A Production of Grit and Grace

Directed by Mary Birnbaum (Artistic & General Director of Opera Saratoga) and music-directed by Rob Ainsley (Artistic & General Director of The Glimmerglass Festival), Happy End is a sharp-witted gangster comedy. Set in a 1920s Chicago speakeasy, the story follows an unlikely romance between a hardened criminal and a Salvation Army missionary.

The production features a new English book by Glimmerglass Dramaturg Kelley Rourke and stars Ana Karneža, winner of the 2024 Lotte Lenya Competition. The ensemble is composed of elite artists with ties to all four partner companies, showcasing the depth of talent nurtured within the New York opera circuit.
