Frances Ulric Naughton Herman: Lets Do This
In a life of many passions, from medical aid to French language tutor, and artistically largely self-taught, Frances made an intensive exploration of the Adirondacks, Bolton Landing and the Lake George area in particular, creating some 200 oil and watercolor paintings: each one a portrait. While her only actual portraitthe Self Portrait (1991) she approached her work as a portrait painter, capturing the physical likeness of a place, a time, or a gathering of objects. Whether a table-top still life, a garden, a mountain range, or a wilderness pond, descriptive titles and notations written on the backs of her artworks reveal her desire to call them by their names.
A collection of Frances artwork will be on display in the north transept at The Bolton Museum every day from May 23 to October 13, 2026 from 10 am to 4pm. A booklet of the exhibit will be available.
