Artist In The Wilderness Artist Statement by Robert Stump The wilderness calls to me and I follow it. I pursue it and stalk it like a hunter. I try to capture it but rarely succeed. I want to hold it in my heart so much it hurts. Sometimes after completing a painting I walk out of the woods and feel like a thief, like I have stolen a moment in time. I take my trophy home to hang on my wall to remind me of the brief connection that the wilderness has allowed me. I realize then that I have been given a gift from nature.

From the early 2000s up until today, Robert continues to paint and study plein air. In 2007, he studied with the renowned landscape painter Scott Christensen and continues to paint the landscape en plein air. Over the last 30 years, Robert has completed hundreds of commissions and restorations for a wide variety of individuals, churches, businesses, and many others across the country. Often times, Robert collaborates with designers, architects and other artists to create the works. The artist’s work has been the feature of newspaper and magazine articles. His work has been included in the pages of Country Living, House Beautiful, Architectural Digest, Design, New Jersey Design and others. Robert’s images have been published as calendars, note cards, greeting cards and other consumer products. His works are sold in dozens of galleries, retail home furnishing stores and mail order companies’ nation wide. Known in some parts of the country as the "Adirondack Artist" the inspiration for much of Robert’s work comes from traveling through and painting in many of the nation’s state and national parks. Incorporating works into his glass and found objects pieces. The natural beauty of North America is a never-ending source of inspiration. Robert is dedicated to capturing, in both the visual arts and also in music (acoustic, country/bluegrass), what he affectionately calls the Americana Project capturing old America, which continues to vanish today.
