The Department of New York American Gold Star Mothers (AGSM) returns to Lake George for its second year in a row. The public is invited to attend the annual convention’s opening ceremony planned for Friday, April 28, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Strand Theatre in Hudson Falls.
Since its inception in the 1920’s, the Department of New York American Gold Star Mothers Convention has brought together mothers of children lost while serving on active duty in the United States military. Veterans and family members join the weekend events to share their stories and rally to support the veteran community.
“These Gold Star Moms have carried on the sacred tradition since the 1920’s, remembering and honoring their Heroes, our Heroes. Many work tirelessly to help veterans and their families throughout the year, all while keeping the legacy of their children in the forefront of their mind and heart”, said Cindy Roberts, AGSM Department of New York President.
Roberts adds that the Memorial Ceremony is a chance to enjoy the Lake George Community Band, Galloway Gaelic Bagpipes, and “reflect not only on the cost of Freedom, but to remember those who have fought and are still fighting and serving in the United States military”.
The hour-long opening ceremony will commence at 6 p.m at the Strand Theatre, followed by beverages and cake. Live music bt the Lake George Community Band will play while guests are being seated. Members of several veteran affiliations will be present including; Rolling Thunder National,, Patriot Guard Riders NY and the Legion Riders. Gold Star Mothers will be escorted by the Schenectady JROTC. This event is free and open to the public.
The AGSM group will be staying in Lake George Village for the remainder of the weekend. Several village-wide activities are planned, including a wreath laying in Shepard’s Park at 3PM on Saturday. Roberts is also adding a village-wide scavenger hunt to encourage attendees to stop into local shops and restaurants.
“Having the Department of New York American Gold Star Mothers Convention return to Lake George is exciting for me personally. There will be opportunities for the Mom’s Teams to participate in the 2023 AGSM Duck Hunt while interacting with the various businesses in Lake George for a variety of donated prizes. Last year the peaceful setting was exactly what I had hoped for. The welcome and kindness of Lake George embraced not only the Moms but their families, Veterans and guests. Time spent enjoying the camaraderie of old friends from a club no one wants to join while connecting with new friends while relaxing in our picturesque Adirondacks.” said Roberts.
“The Gold Star Mothers are a very important part of our veteran community throughout the State and we are proud that they’ve chosen to return to the Lake George area for their annual gathering. Their return is a testament to the generosity and hospitality of our community’s responsiveness to the needs of veterans,” said Gina Mintzer, Executive Director of the Lake George Regional Chamber of Commerce & CVB .
