The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Boys Basketball State Championships, presented by the American Dairy Association North East, will be returning live to the Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls, New York, for the second year in a row. Friday, March 17, kicks off the tournament, wrapping up all finals by Sunday, March 19. This year marks the centennial anniversary of the NYSPHSAA.
Glens Falls, which hosted the tournament for 36 consecutive years (1981-2016), will conduct the final year of the three-year term that was agreed for the 2021-2023 championships. The tournament was canceled in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The host location for next year’s tournament has not been determined.
“For many, the basketball court at the Cool Insuring Arena has a certain mystique,” said Glens Falls Mayor Bill Collins. “In fact, some will say our basketball court is ‘sacred.’ From Mullen to Laettner, from Marbury to Huerter, from Jimmer to JG III. It’s why we say ‘The Road to Glens Falls. Where Legends are Made.’”
The championship brings in winning teams from the five NYSPHSAA school classifications: AA, A, B, C, and D with a total of 15 games for spectators to watch. The number of NYSPHSAA classifications will move to six in Fall 2023, adding a AAA classification for highschools with greater than 1,090 enrolled students.
According to the Lake George Regional Convention & VIsitors Bureau, this type of event is a monetary engine of its own, generating more than $5 million dollars in an estimated economic and employment impact for the local community. This estimation using an economic impact calculator includes accommodations, food and beverage, retail, recreation, transportation, and any other spending that occurs in the area because of the tournament.
“It is very exciting to welcome the NYS Public High School Athletic Association Boys Basketball Championships back to Glens Falls. The buzz from the schools, the students, the fans and the community is electric. We are fortunate to host this tournament that brings so many visitors to the area to stay overnight, enjoy our restaurants, outlet shopping and more, in addition to all that the Cool Insuring Arena offers " said Gina Mintzer, Lake George Regional Chamber of Commerce & CVB Executive Director.
